Hi - I made a list of users who've made lots of edits but aren't admins and thought I'd left a message on the talk page of every user who's on it (but looking through your talk page history, don't see one on yours - hmmm, maybe I thought since you were on RFA you were clearly interested). I understand your recent rfa failed (bummer!), and I don't know if I'm going to keep my list updated, or if anyone will ever look at it, but I thought I'd let you know I've left the '*' by your name on the assumption you're still interested. If not, please feel free to remove it. -- Rick Block (talk) July 7, 2005 04:24 (UTC) |

Revision as of 19:36, 7 July 2005

I'd be willing to scan just about all of the NASA stuff if it's really only 500 pages or so. Do you want me to send it back when I am done? I was thinking some of the documents might be better OCR'd and converted to wikitext articles, if they are predominantly textual. My scanner can scan up to legal size. For anything larger, I have a hand scanner that scans a path 4 inches wide, can stitch those scans together for larger images. please delete my email address when you are done with it. Pedant 17:54, 2004 Oct 16 (UTC)
- pages are in the mail you should recieve them soon. Alkivar 04:18, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)
The package of NASA material has arrived. It appears to have survived the trip well. I haven't opened it yet, will try to start tonight.Pedant 22:34, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)
I'm stuck for a bit on scanning, the computer the scanner is connected to has had the RAM removed, I'm waiting to get it back from Kingston. They received it on the 22nd of November, so I expect it back in a matter of days. Pedant 07:23, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC) OK, I have the scanner running, trying to figure out the OCR thing. I uploaded this one file for test purposes. I'd like to convert this kind of thing to wikitext rather than keep them as jpgs, cause they get pretty big. If you know of any resources to help me figure out optical character recognition, I'd be grateful. Pedant 22:12, 2004 Dec 29 (UTC)
- all right, I have worked a bit at it,and looks like I'm started. The front page for the archive, at present is at this page on wikisource Pedant 06:55, 2004 Dec 30 (UTC)
- EXCELLENT! Alkivar 01:24, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
A quick note to say thanks

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for your support in my request for adminship. It was certainly a wild ride, and I really appreciate you taking some time out to contribute. ClockworkSoul 16:26, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your work on the Jew template
I know it's a bit frustrating now, but in the end I think it's going to be vastly improved, and most of the credit goes to you. Jayjg | (Talk) 02:54, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Signatures
Heya. Have you seen Wikipedia:Username#Signatures? You're free to use images in your sig if you want to ofcourse, but it is perceived as unpleasant by some people (if you'd already read that and decided to anyway, please ignore this message). ----fvw* 15:43, 2005 Jan 3 (UTC)
- Yeah I read that but it said its not official policy as of yet. So I figured this might spur someone to finally get that decision made; Its meant to be slightly annoying yet not too obtrusive. That and the radioactive unicode symbol isnt as pretty ;) User:Alkivar/sig 20:15, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- You're trying to force people to make a strict policy? What are you hoping for, to have it explicity allowed or explicitly disallowed? If the latter, see Don't disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point; If the former: It is allowed now. Making it allowed explicitly in policy isn't going to change the fact that it annoys a lot of people. --fvw* 20:40, 2005 Jan 3 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up on the sig. I thought I had fixed whatever problem the developers made, I might be mistaken. I mean don't they look alright now, they do to me? In any case, I don't think the use of the "Raw" setting will work on the sigs I left already.--metta, The Sunborn ☥ 23:28, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Just dropping by to say your signature makes your username stick out on a page... like a sore thumb. Ashibaka tlk 21:13, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Nice work, and thanks

I just wanted to thank you for coming up with the idea for the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar, which evolved into the finest (and in my opinion highest) award that we have here at the 'pedia.
Oh, and by the way (for what it's worth) I like your orange sig and the associate image. It adds a bit of flavor to sometimes bland pages. – ClockworkSoul 14:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Defender of the Wiki Barnstar citation
Kudos on inventing the Defender of the Wiki Barnstar. Since I think defense of Wikipedia is extremely important, I've edited the DOTWB page to include their citations and supporting evidence. In fact, the only award I can't find supporting evidence for is... um... yours. Could you link it in when you get the chance? Thanks! Alba 00:45, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I dont have one... I never self award. :) User:Alkivar/sig 01:07, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your FAC support and for updating the table, looks good! Is it Hardcore dance music you're into or that horrible Hardcore Rap stuff they play on MTV? There's very, VERY few of us hardcore dance music fans in the US :) Zerbey 18:39, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the cleanup on Types of Camps - much clearer now. One question - what is IMO ? Regards Oldfarm 04:15, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thank you!
Thanks for your support on my RfA... and your bit of livening it up. (For the record, far be it from this lady to protest too much. :-)) I shall attempt to put the shiny new buttons to good use! Mindspillage (spill yours?) 20:36, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Audio help
Alkivar, I think I remember you mentioning you would be willing to help with the Spoken Wikipedia project because you were an audio engineer. Was wondering if you could provide some hints on what to do about the widely varying audio levels we have in the recordings. For example, the Evolution spoken version is very dim. Perhaps you could help write some hints on using a compressor or normalization of the audio before exporting? Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spoken_Wikipedia#Production_tips Thanks. - I added some data, hopefully this will help. Let me know if you think I need to clarify more. ALKIVAR™

Help
Calling for backup. Help save List of incidents famously considered great blunders. A wonderfully useful article and the subject of a number of books and documentaries. Viciously attacked by deletionists. It does have a few supporters, but our voices are being drowned out. Please help save this article! - Pioneer-12 06:48, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. Did I mention that I love your signature? It looks like it's some sort of nuclear weapon. Is there any easy way to contact more people to ask them to vote on the article? I have already listed it on the AIW page. - Pioneer-12 09:25, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Savage Bumper Music
Hey, I concede your point on the music and I stand corrected. I don't think the occasional bumper music is "Du Hast" though because I DL'd "Du Hast" and that wasn't it. Might you know what it is?
- I'd have to hear a sample of the tune in question to compare it to my Rammstein albums... just so I know which one your referring to. If you can find a way to work that out i'll do my best. ALKIVAR™

expos/nationals debate
There is a major debate going on, and I wondered if you might want to chime in. The debate involves how to deal with franchise moves in baseball. The question is whether Montréal Expos should be its own article or if it should redirect to Washington Nationals. All other instances of franchise moves in MLB redirect the old team name to the new team name, and the history of the franchise is covered within the new team name (for MLB, NBA and NFL examples, see here. Some people are confused and think the Expos and the Nats are different teams. Some people don't want to upset Canadian readers.
Indeed, the Washington Nationals are not a new team - the Montreal Expos franchise has moved to Washington, and the old franchise name should redirect to the new franchise name, just like the 20+ instances of this occuring in Wikipedia. For example, Brooklyn Dodger history resides in the Los Angeles Dodgers article. New York Giants history, including the Shot Heard 'Round the World, resides in the San Francisco Giants article.
If you have the time, maybe you could chime in on the conversation there, Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Montréal Expos. Kingturtle 17:23, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Pick a pic
So, here are four possible options for when the Single Convention hits the main page: Talk:Single_Convention_on_Narcotic_Drugs/TFA. There is the opium-harvesting pic #1, the cannabis pic #2, the coca-chewing pic #3, and of course, the ever-popular treaty-signing pic #4. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks, 205.217.105.2 17:33, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
- Here is what my friend Tommy said:
- hey man- i'm thinking either # 1 or 3 because they seem to go along best with the contents of the article. number 4 is just too hard to make out even when it's been enlarged- and number 2 well- i'm not going to fault you if that's the winner, but i stick by what i said before- now out of those two i like number 1 the best because i think it clearly illustrates part of the reason why this came about- in other words, it's pretty convincing evidence, then again 3 does that too- how decisive i am. this day is not moving along fast enough, but it's almost 2:30, i guess that's good news- alright, later
- 205.217.105.2 18:24, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
- 2 or 3 is definately the best choice. ALKIVAR™

- Yeah, good call, I gave the lead an overhaul too. See Wikipedia talk:Today's_featured_article#Single_Convention_on_Narcotic_Drugs. 205.217.105.2 21:29, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
- 2 or 3 is definately the best choice. ALKIVAR™
I thought you might be able to help out a fellow inclusionist on the VFD for bro. It needs cleanup but some people are trying to redirect it to brother. Check out my vote comment. Thanks —TeknicTalk/Mail 03:24, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

A change
Hi there! While I respect your opinion of me, I'd like to say that I've changed since we've first met. I admit to having been somewhat trigger-happy in the past, but I've become convinced that organizing (or adding to) existing content is far more beneficial to the 'pedia than getting rid of sub-par articles that most people wouldn't notice in the first place. Thus I'd consider myself a strong mergist, and please realize that I contributed heavily to WP:FICT (which basically calls for including any and all articles on fiction) and I even wrote a rule of thumb "Do not nominate schools for deletion". Of course that may or may not matter to you, but since we haven't spoken much recently I thought I'd mention it. Oh btw, I presently have about 1700 article edits. Yours, Radiant_* 10:20, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you. Whichever way the nomination turns out, I'll promise to do my best. Radiant_* 11:31, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)
A question
Hi Alkivar - ever thought of becoming an admin? If so, I'd willingly nominate you! Grutness...wha? 08:46, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think it's time for a renomination. 205.217.105.2 14:21, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Okay... let me reword that - would you accept nomination if I put your name forward? There's only one way to find out whether you'd be accepted. Grutness...wha? 23:20, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hm... it's about two and a half months since your last nomination... I'll wait a couple of weeks until it's past the three month mark, and put your name on rfa. Grutness...wha? 00:27, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Signature
Thanks for voting in my RfA - but please don't use images in signatures! They are unnecessary server load. See WP:~~~~. r3m0t talk June 30, 2005 20:28 (UTC) (reply here)
- What are the size restrictions for signatures, anyhow? I've been considering using one myself. —RaD Man (talk) 1 July 2005 01:20 (UTC)
- For the record i've had this conversation with the dev's ... the image is on commons, not on the en server. The server load is therefore negligible. Or at least thats the conclusion we came to. As for the other reasons listed, it neither interferes with line height nor blinks... I think you worry too much :) ALKIVAR™
