January 14, 1963 Nasa Facts

I'd be willing to scan just about all of the NASA stuff if it's really only 500 pages or so. Do you want me to send it back when I am done? I was thinking some of the documents might be better OCR'd and converted to wikitext articles, if they are predominantly textual. My scanner can scan up to legal size. For anything larger, I have a hand scanner that scans a path 4 inches wide, can stitch those scans together for larger images. please delete my email address when you are done with it. Pedant 17:54, 2004 Oct 16 (UTC)

pages are in the mail you should recieve them soon. Alkivar 04:18, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The package of NASA material has arrived. It appears to have survived the trip well. I haven't opened it yet, will try to start tonight.Pedant 22:34, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)

I'm stuck for a bit on scanning, the computer the scanner is connected to has had the RAM removed, I'm waiting to get it back from Kingston. They received it on the 22nd of November, so I expect it back in a matter of days. Pedant 07:23, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)

OK, I have the scanner running, trying to figure out the OCR thing. I uploaded this one file for test purposes. I'd like to convert this kind of thing to wikitext rather than keep them as jpgs, cause they get pretty big. If you know of any resources to help me figure out optical character recognition, I'd be grateful. Pedant 22:12, 2004 Dec 29 (UTC)

all right, I have worked a bit at it,and looks like I'm started. The front page for the archive, at present is at this page on wikisource Pedant 06:55, 2004 Dec 30 (UTC)
EXCELLENT! Alkivar 01:24, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

You been doing any more with those NASA Facts papers? Sorta curious as I havent heard anything in a while. ALKIVAR™ 01:02, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

yes, I have taken a break on that, I'm working on getting a faster scanner, but I will definitely follow through on the whole pile. I'm really busy these days so faster is really gooder... gotta run, let me know when you get back from your break. Pedant 02:18, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
some of this ... seems to be missing, but I don't know why. They've moved a lot of stuff from wikisource to en.wikisource, but some it is missing. I've been real busy, haven't worked on it in like a year? User:Pedant 05:33, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A quick note to say thanks

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for your support in my request for adminship. It was certainly a wild ride, and I really appreciate you taking some time out to contribute. ClockworkSoul 16:26, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on the Jew template

I know it's a bit frustrating now, but in the end I think it's going to be vastly improved, and most of the credit goes to you. Jayjg | (Talk) 02:54, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Nice work, and thanks

I, ClockworkSoul, award you this barnstar for your innovation and initiative in the creation of the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar

I just wanted to thank you for coming up with the idea for the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar, which evolved into the finest (and in my opinion highest) award that we have here at the 'pedia.

Oh, and by the way (for what it's worth) I like your orange sig and the associate image. It adds a bit of flavor to sometimes bland pages. – ClockworkSoul 14:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Defender of the Wiki Barnstar citation

Kudos on inventing the Defender of the Wiki Barnstar. Since I think defense of Wikipedia is extremely important, I've edited the DOTWB page to include their citations and supporting evidence. In fact, the only award I can't find supporting evidence for is... um... yours. Could you link it in when you get the chance? Thanks! Alba 00:45, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I dont have one... I never self award. :)  ALKIVAR 01:07, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Steve Dalkowski

Thank you for your FAC support and for updating the table, looks good! Is it Hardcore dance music you're into or that horrible Hardcore Rap stuff they play on MTV? There's very, VERY few of us hardcore dance music fans in the US :) Zerbey 18:39, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Impressive work on the Colditz Castle. I enjoyed reading the article. StRay 20:39, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Signature

Thanks for voting in my RfA - but please don't use images in signatures! They are unnecessary server load. See [[WP:~~~~]]. r3m0t talk June 30, 2005 20:28 (UTC) (reply here)

What are the size restrictions for signatures, anyhow? I've been considering using one myself. —RaD Man (talk) 1 July 2005 01:20 (UTC)
For the record i've had this conversation with the dev's ... the image is on commons, not on the en server. The server load is therefore negligible. Or at least thats the conclusion we came to. As for the other reasons listed, it neither interferes with line height nor blinks... I think you worry too much :)  ALKIVAR 1 July 2005 06:45 (UTC)
Well, I trust the devs. OK then. r3m0t talk July 1, 2005 07:07 (UTC)

You have been nominated

You have made a positive impact on Wikipedia, and I firmly believe sysop privileges would only enhance your contribution abilities. If you do not mind, I have taken it upon myself to nominate you for adminship on this hallowed occassion. Please see Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/nominate#What_to_do_if_you_are_nominated: should you wish to accept, as there have been some changes to the RFA process as of late. Wikimania 2006

Firstly, enjoy your Wikibreak; come back clear-headed and ready to edit! Second, I noticed you live in New England, and are a DJ (awesome!), and wondered if you've heard of Wikimania 2006, which is happening right here in our fair city of Boston. I know it's a few hours' drive from where you are, but if you could participate in IRC chats, or volunteer to help with Wikimania, we'd really appreciate it. I enjoy working with you, and look forward to seeing you in the future. Happy wikibreak, Mysekurity 02:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I dispute your unsourced assertion that you ever sit on your "lazy ass"! If you expect such controversial claims to remain unchallenged, you should not use such a recognizable sig! No one even has to check your contribs to see that is a deliberately false and misleading statement. I am deeply disappointed in you for attempting to push this unsupported minority POV. Also, excellent work on the many aspects of warez (it's refreshing to see well written articles by people who have a clue). Image:Alkivar-003-TWEAKED.jpg

I have a question about the above mentioned picture. You state it was taken by Utopium Photography, yet you claim to be the copyright holder. If this picture was not taken by you, but you are the subject the photographer has to release the copyright to you. Just like wedding photos, the married couple do not hold any copyrights, or infact any rights to the photos. Mike (T C) 23:30, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dude... you have absolutely no idea what the hell your talking about. In the US, works for hire cannot be registered for copyright by the creator. See this pdf:
Under the 1976 Copyright Act as amended (title 17 of the United States Code), a work is protected by copyright from the time it is created in a fixed form. In other words, when a work is written down or otherwise set into tangible form, the copyright immediately becomes the property of the author who created it. Only the author or those deriving their rights from the author can rightfully claim copyright.
Although the general rule is that the person who creates a work is the author of that work, there is an exception to that principle: the copyright law defines a category of works called “works made for hire.” If a work is “made for hire,” the employer, and not the employee, is considered the author. The employer may be a firm, an organization, or an individual.
Note the section in bold. Nuff said.  ALKIVAR 19:27, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Oakenfold

I agree that the way I worded it, it sounded like he mixed his own records. I sat there for a few minutes trying to peice together a sentence that would be both grammatically correct and convey the correct message. "Not only did Oakenfold produce records, but he also mixed them." A few too many modifiers. The words but and also are both redundant but without them the sentence is screwed. Perhaps, "Oakenfold even mixed the records he produced for others" or something of the ilk? drumguy8800 - speak? 02:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Any chance of some help?

I'm a bit disapointed by my photo of a print, it was under glass, no lighting, so the flash is a problem, I tried to photoshop out as much as I could but I wondered if you had a program that could level out the background white as it gets real grey away from the centre. pretty please? :) --Alf melmac 22:19, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did my best to level out the flash, I also corrected the angular distortion so the frame around the sketch looks square now. I also reduced it to greyscale as color needlessly increased the file size for this image. If this is not what you wanted feel free to revert my changes.  ALKIVAR 22:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You run a fast and efficient ship there Alkivar :) I've just been appreciating it high res and zoomed in, that's a great improvement. Thanks. --Alf melmac 23:14, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

A well deserved barnstar for you, for your creation of the List of units using the B-26 Marauder during World War II. It helped me get rid of some red links on my own pet project...List of United States Marine Corps aircraft squadrons. Cheers--Looper5920 10:25, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I, VegaDark, award you this barnstar for your continued improvement of Wikipedia

Been meaning to give you one of these for a while now. I think I have agreed with you on 99% of every Wikipedia discussion we have both participated in, even on the really controversial ones that I am often in the minority of. It's good to know someone else in the project shares my views on so many topics. VegaDark 04:34, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is against policy to create cross namespace redirects per Wikipedia:Redirect#When_should_we_delete_a_redirect.3F:

You might want to delete a redirect if one or more of the following conditions is met (but note also the exceptions listed below this list):
5. It is a cross-space redirect out of article space, such as one pointing into the User or Wikipedia namespace. The major exceptions to this rule are the "WP:" shortcut redirects (like WP:RFD), which technically are in the main article space but in practice form their own "pseudo-namespace". All "articles" beginning with "WP:" are in fact redirects. -- ALKIVAR 23:08, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can't argue with the terms I suppose, so I'll give up the fight on this one despite the overwhelming support. Though the entire experience has left me with the temptation to request that WP:RFD be re-directed to Arbitrary. -- Randall00 Talk 21:48, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Deletions

Today you deleted the article on Logan Whitehurst with the rationale that this is NOT A MEMORIAL SITE. I understand that is Wikipedia policy, but Mr. Whitehurst, it is argued, was notable outside of friends and family. A musician and artist who played in and founded a prominent current northern California band, The Velvet Teen. A solo musician who released 6 full albums, at least one of which can be acquired at music stores nationwide, and several LPs. His work gained an INTERNATIONAL fanbase, including major pockets in Japan and the UK. An artist who designed artwork for several successful bands. Regularly and prominently featured on the Doctor Demento radio show, broadcast nationwide. Played on college stations around the country. His death prompted a full article in the North Bay Bohemian in California, where he had been the subject of more than a few articles. He garnered obituary articles in SFGate.com, PunkNews.org, PitchforkMedia.com, Aversion.com, Metroactive.com, PortlandMercury.com, Betweenplanets.co.uk, and other music news sites. Posthumously, a cancer research fundraising organization has been formed in his name. Is it now Wikipedia policy to delete articles about musicians just because you've never heard of them? This article existed before he died, and it was unjustly removed after his death and unfairly judged as a "memorial" site, even though editorial content had been removed and neutrality had been established. Thanks a bunch.

edit: And, just to be sure, I am not from Northern California, and I knew the man through his music. I am from Florida. But I guess that smacks of non-notability!—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.53.198.45 (talk) 05:28, 6 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Having 6 albums does not a notable musician make... All of them are independant labels. Read the WP:MUSIC guidelines... lets tackle them one at a time:
1. Has had a charted hit on any national music chart.
Nope
2. Has had a record certified gold or higher in at least one country.
Nope
3. Has gone on an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country, reported in reliable sources.
Nope.
4. Has released two or more albums on a major label or one of the more important indie labels (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years and a roster of performers, many of which are notable).
Released two or more albums check... on a major label nope... on one of the more important indie labels nope.
5. Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable; note that it is often most appropriate to use redirects in place of articles on side projects, early bands and such.
None of his band memberships are notable per WP:MUSIC.
6. Has become the most prominent representative of a notable style or of the local scene of a city; note that the subject must still meet all ordinary Wikipedia standards, including verifiability.
Nope.
7. Has won a major music award, such as a Grammy, Juno or Mercury Music Award.
Nope
8. Has won (or in some cases placed second) in a major music competition.
Nope.
9. Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show. (But if this is the only claim, it is probably more appropriate to have a mention in the main article and redirect to that page.)
Nope.
10. Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network.
Doctor Demento doesnt count as a major radio network sorry. A nationally syndicated show yes... but Logan is not in regular rotation by a radio network.
11. Has been the subject of a half hour or longer broadcast on a national radio or TV network.
Nope.
As far as designing artwork for other bands... he deserves mention on those particular albums in passing. Obituaries dont count as non-trivial media coverage. Sorry but he fails WP:MUSIC and WP:BIO.  ALKIVAR 05:58, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Obituaries might fail, but the articles about his death pass wiki's standards. Wiki describes trivial as "a mention in passing that does not discuss the subject in detail." Read Note 3 under notability. These articles pass the test:

Well, even though it is obvious your mind won't be changed on the issue, and I can respect that, please understand, Logan had indeed toured internationally in Japan. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.53.198.45 (talk) 06:07, 6 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Can you provide a reliable source to back that claim?  ALKIVAR 06:09, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The best I can do is a link to Slowdance Records -- which mentions The Velvet Teen's international touring and Japanese following ( http://www.slowdance.com/thevelvetteen.php )-- and a popmatters.com article which also mentions the tour ( http://www.popmatters.com/music/concerts/v/velvet-teen-040814.shtml ). No specifics as far as dates or locations. And I suppose you'd want him to have toured solo, not as a member of the Velvet Teen, so I suppose I should just drop the torch. Sorry for bothering you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.53.198.45 (talk) 06:24, 6 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Here's another article that makes mention of the Japanese tour: http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Content?oid=89347&category=32741

I believe his involvement in the incredibly successful "The Velvet Teen" should be enough to warrent the article on Wiki. Here is their MTV page:

http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/velvet_teen/artist.jhtml

Which of course lists and pictures Logan, as well as music videos from the band.

All information on Velvet Teen on MTV.com comes from All Music Guide and is not a statement by MTV.  ALKIVAR 06:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The music videos do not come from All Music Guide, only the description given for the band.
Also: "Has been the subject of a half hour or longer broadcast on a national radio or TV network." Logan was the subject of an entire hour long episode of the Dr. Demento Show, which is indeed broadcast nationally. You can verify this on Dr. Demento's website: http://www.drdemento.com/
I'd say having an entire show dedicated to you on the most famous comedy radio show of all time certainly qualifies his notability.FilmCow 07:08, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
