History

The Passamaquoddy people are federally recognized in the United States as the Passamaquoddy Tribe in Maine. No Passamaquoddy First Nation has been recognized in Canada. The PRGI has around 350 members. In 2018, the Canadian federal government purchased 2,500 acres of land along the St. Croix River (Skutik River) and handed over the land to the PRGI.[1] As of 2020, the PRGI had been negotiating for two years with the provincial and federal governments.[2] As of 2025, the Peskotomuhkati Nation remains without First Nations status in Canada.
