"Lighter" is a song by Norwegian singer and songwriter Kyle Alessandro. It was written and produced by Alessandro himself alongside Adam Woods. The song was released on 24 January 2025 and will represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. It reached number eleven on the Norwegian Singles Chart.
Background and composition
Lighter was written and produced by Kyle Alessandro and Adam Woods. Alessandro states that the song was inspired by his mother, who told him after her cancer diagnosis that he should never lose his light. The song is about fighting back after a setback and finding hope even in difficult times. In the chorus he repeats the statement that he is his own lighter.[1][2] Eva Frantz of Yle described the song as mixing elements of medieval, Baroque, Norwegian folk and modern pop music.[3]
An acoustic version of "Lighter" was released on 28 March 2025.[4] Alessandro recorded a symphonic version of the song with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra at the Store Studio , which is set for release on 18 April 2025 through NRK TV.[5]
Reception
Critic Tor Martin Bøe awarded the live performance three out of six points in the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang. He described the song as "Game of Thrones pop" and criticized the fact that the drop did not quite manage to be memorable.[6] He previously awarded the song itself two out of six possible points. Bøe criticized, among other things, the metaphor contained in the chorus that one is now fireproof because one is now one's own lighter. At Dagbladet, Alessandro received five out of six possible points for his performance at the Melodi Grand Prix. The reviewer Ralf Lofstad described the chorus as catchy.[7]
