George P. Abraham
George P. Abraham (died 2025) was an Indian urologist and nephrologist based in Kochi, Kerala, with a medical career spanning over five decades. He was instrumental in advancing kidney transplantation in India, performing more than 2,500 renal transplants over 25 years. He was the third surgeon globally to conduct a laparoscopic renal transplant on a living donor and was responsible for Kerala's first cadaver transplant, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and 3D laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.[1][2][3]
Career and awards
Abraham was associated with VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi, where he served as the Head of the Department and Senior Consultant in Urology and Renal Transplant. His expertise extended to complex urological surgeries, and he helped pioneer endourological procedures in Kerala, with over 15,000 such procedures to his credit. He organized India's first 3D laparoscopic urology workshop (“3D Lapendofusion”).[2][4] His contributions to the medical field earned him numerous accolades, including the Bharat Chikitsak Ratan Award and the Lifetime Health Achievement Award.[1][2][4]
Death
On March 2, 2025, Abraham was found deceased at his farmhouse near Nedumbassery, Kerala. A suicide note recovered at the scene indicated that he was struggling to maintain his surgical proficiency due to health issues following a back surgery six months prior, which had led to hand tremors.[5]
