Description
English: Photo of Orion Belt with the stars Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. The color picture was composited from digitized black and white photographic plates recorded through red and blue astronomical filters, with a computer synthesized green channel. The plates were taken using the Samuel Oschin Telescope, a wide-field survey instrument at Palomar Observatory, between 1987 and 1991.
Italiano: Fotografia dell'asterismo della Cintura di Orione, costituito dalle stelle Alnitak, Alnilam e Mintaka. L'immagine è stata ottenuta componendo due piastre in bianco e nero acquisite tra il 1987 e il 1991 con il Telescopio Samuel Oschin, in uso presso il Palomar Observatory, ed adottando filtri nel rosso e nel blu. Il verde, invece, è frutto di una sintesi computerizzata.
Nei pressi di Alnitak sono visibili, inoltre, la Nebulosa Fiamma e la Nebulosa Testa di Cavallo (sulla sinistra), così come le nebulose a riflessione NGC 2023, IC 431, IC 432, IC 434 e IC 435. Alla sinistra di Mintaka, invece, sono visibili le nubi molecolari IC 426 e IC 423 e la nebulosa a riflessione vdB 48
La posizione di altre stelle luminose presenti nel campo visivo (tra le quali σ Orionis, VV Orionis e 31 Orionis) è stata evidenziata con l'uso delle note.
