Fair use for Wikipedia's The Gruffalo article only is asserted on the following grounds:

• only a small, screen-ready image is presented
• the image was released by its copyright owner for promotional purposes
• the work represents only a tiny proportion of the original work (the book) and no loss of income for the copyright owner can reasonably be expected
• an image which does not rely on the doctrine of fair use is difficult or impossible to obtain
• a single, modestly sized image of the work is necessary for a proper scholarly discussion of the work, particularly because the appearance of the work (an illustrated children's book) is an important element of that scholarly discussion
