English: Internal optics of a DVD-RW read/write head, detailing the path of the various light beams.
Red = High-intensity record laser (to disc) Green = Low-intensity read laser (to disc) Blue = Reflected light from disc (to optical sensor)
Note the crystal at center frame is angled at 45 degrees, sloping up out of the picture and to the right. This reflects all three beams down into the picture (through the carriage) to the surface of the disc (which would normally be located where the blue mat is). The optical sensing chip (which converts the reflected beam into electrical signals) would normally be affixed to the right side of the carriage. There is also a lens (not shown) on the other side of the carriage which is mounted to a voice-coil assembly, allowing it to move up and down and thus changing the focal point of the beams.
