Description

Chapel of St Mary on the Bridge in Derby near where Nicholas Garlick died. This historic grade 1 listed building is one of six surviving bridge chapels in the country. It was built in the 14th century, when St Mary's bridge was the only river crossing in Derby. The original bridge was replaced in the 18th century, and nowadays the dual carriageway Derby ring road crosses the river immediately behind the chapel. On 15th July 1588 three catholic priests were

hanged here. The chapel was restored in 1930 is still in use.
