Summary

Description
English: Causeway to Bhatarsaigh The causeway, completed in 1991, spans the 250 metres separating the island of Bhatarsaigh (Vatersay) from its larger neighbour Barra. Its purpose was to stem the depopulation of Bhatarsaigh by providing easier access to services and amenities, and in this is has succeeded. Before its construction islanders' cattle had to swim the tidal strait to Barra before they could be taken to market, and the loss in 1985 of the island's prize bull gave further impetus to demands for the provision of a fixed link, which was finally approved by Act of Parliament in 1987. The boulders in the foreground mark the limit of the large quarry from which the stone for the causeway was taken. The space between the quarry and the causeway is being made use of for storing creels. There are a slipway and a parking area at the far end, on Bhatarsaigh.
