Online streaming

In 2010, the radio station migrated online where it broadcasted on IBM's Ustream. In 2019, the radio station migrated from Ustream to YouTube, then to Twitch.

Social media

In 2017, Nessie Lane Atwood became the Program Director and started promotion by making handmade posters and putting them up on the window outside the station.[8][9][10] They got the attention of the students and the college administration, being a fan favorite amongst the school population. [11][12]Soon after, Nessie debuted the radio station onto social media and began gaining a significant online following. KGUR's posts on Instagram have garnered thousands of views, and several followers across all platforms. [13]

Captain Lokknessie

Nessie's shows became one of the most popular, due to the intricate visuals she would post on her personal Instagram page.[14] Her shows originally consisted of shock-jock material, outlandishly using sarcasm and edgy humor to get a reaction out of the listeners.[15] She was the first to open song requests, having stated that "the only way to get listeners is to help them feel listened to"[16].[17] The combination of the flashy posters, the edgy content, and her creative DJ persona Captain Lokknessie, an undead sailor captain, her shows skyrocketed into internet notoriety.[18]

Over time, her style shifted from the dark sailor captain to a DJ being held hostage by a computer, and eerie concept where she has become a computer program forced to play songs chosen by an algorithm, instead of having a heart and soul to guide the music.[19] This was inspired by vaporwave, Lofi and Frutiger aero, along with the glitch-core aesthetic.[20] In recent years, she has opted for a more calming, chill, laid back style, using an ASMR like voice to entrance the listeners.[21]
