244 Medium Regiment is part of the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army.

Formation

244 Medium Regiment was raised as a field artillery regiment on 1 May 1982 at Kamptee with a mixed class composition under Lieutenant Colonel LK Arora (Brig Retd) as the first commanding officer. The unit was first known as Mortar Regiment, therafter the unit received field artillery and changed its name to 244 Field Regiment.[citation needed]

Initially equipped with Indian Field Gun, the Regiment has been equipped with Light Field Gun, D-30 Howitzer, Medium Guns & Heavy Tampella Mortars (was called as 244 Heavy Mortar Regiment) as its colours since its raising. Today the unit is equipped with Medium artillery hence its name.[citation needed]

Operations

Since its raising the regiment has participated in Op BAJRANG (Punjab), Op RAKSHAK (Punjab), Op VIJAY (Dras Sector), Op PARAKRAM (J&K), Op Rakshak (CI/J&K), Op RAKSHAK(HAA/J&K) and Op RHINO (Assam)

Op Bajrang

During Op Bajrang, the unit executed mulitple successful operations , while restoring normalcy to internal security in Punjab.

Op VIJAY[2]

The unit participated in the Op Vijay with unique distinction of the only regiment equipped with 160mm Heavy Tampella Mortars in the regiment of artillery. Regiment had Provided accurate and devastating fire power inflicting severe damage and casualties on the enemy & facilitated critical operations in the Battle of Tololing, Point 5140, Point 4875(Gun Hill), Tiger Hill, Black Rock & Point 4700.

The gallant gunners & heavy mortars were there at all folds of operations, firing unabated 8500 rounds of bombs during the operation.

Op RAKSHAK

The unit completed an extremely successful & incident free high altitude area (HAA) & Counter Insurgency Operation tenure along the Line of Control & on challenging icy peaks at north east front while performing all operational and HADR tasks with distinction.

Counter Insurgency

During the counter insurgency tenure in Assam[5] and Arunachal Pradesh, the Regiment etched a golden history with resounding success of 79 apprehension/surrenders and recovery of 04 Assault Rifles, 29 Pistols and numerous warlike stores[6]

Awards

Maj K Sachin Singh was awarded prestigious Sena Medal by the Govt of India.[7]

Op SNOWLEOPARD[8]

During the operation, the Regiment again was in the forefront defending the Northern Borders during the heightened & volatile situation along Line of Actual Control(LAC). This unwavering Operations commitment over a period of four years in North East was acknowledged with unit's first ever General Officer Commanding in Chief Eastern Command Unit Appreciation in year 2022.

Motto

The motto of the regiment is ‘Sadaiv Aage’, which translates to ‘Always Ahead’.
