Dhaulakuan

Dhaulakuan or Dhaula Kuan is a small town in the Paonta Sahib tehsil of Sirmour district in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is strategically located between Nahan, one of the tehsils of Sirmour district, and Paonta Sahib on National Highway 72, which connects Dehradun and Shimla. It is situated on the foothills between Renuka and Dadahu, another town in Nahan tehsil.[1]

Agricultural and educational significance

Dhaulakuan is renowned for its agricultural contributions, particularly in horticulture. It hosts the Hill Agricultural Research and Extension Centre and the Dhaulakuan Horticulture University of Himachal Pradesh, making it a hub for agricultural research and education in the region.[2] The fertile Paonta Valley, which begins from Dhaulakuan, is known for producing various types of oranges, contributing significantly to the local agrarian economy.

Historical and cultural sites

The town is also home to the Katasna Devi Temple, a site of historical importance where Raja Jagat Singh defeated the advancing army of Gulam Quadir Rohilla in a significant battle. The temple stands as a monument of gratitude built by Raja Jagat Singh to commemorate his victory.[3]

Infrastructure and industry

Nearby, Giri Nagar is situated about 5 km from Dhaulakuan along the Nahan-Paonta Sahib highway. Giri Nagar houses a 60 MW hydroelectric power plant, which was constructed by diverting the Giri River through a 6 km tunnel. The electricity generated from this plant is distributed to Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.[4]

In recent years, Dhaulakuan has seen the establishment of several new industries, boosted the local economy and provided employment opportunities to the residents
