Dhani or Dhanni (دھنّی; pronounced [ˈd̥ə˥˩n.niː])[1] is a dialect of the Punjabi language, spoken in the southern region of the Pothohar Plateau in Pakistani Punjab, specifically in the districts of Attock, Chakwal, and Talagang.[2] Its name is derived from Dhan valley where its spoken.[citation needed] It has many sub-dialects including Sohāī̃ (سوہائیِں), spoken west of the Soan River, in the tehsils of Fateh Jang and Pindi Gheb in Attock District.[1]
It is closely related to Shahpuri and Jhangvi dialects. It, along with Shahpuri, Jhangvi, Pahari-Pothwari, and Thali, is intermediate between Majhi (Central Punjabi) and Lahnda (Western Punjabi).
Classification
In the 1920s G.A. Grierson in his Linguistic Survey of India called this group North-Western Lahnda.[1] Jatki is a common name for the Jhangvi dialect, Shahpuri dialect and Dhani dialect. The glotlog codes for these are:
